Marrakesh is a city that has played a significant role in history, witnessing important events throughout the years. Founded by Yusuf bin Tashfin, the first Almoravid ruler, in 1062 AD, the city has been a center of culture, commerce, and religion. Despite facing many challenges over the centuries, Marrakesh has always risen to the occasion and emerged stronger.
The city has seen many rulers come and go, each leaving their mark on its history. From constructing magnificent mosques and palaces to planting palm trees and teaching the Qur’an, Marrakesh has always been a city of great vision and ambition. Despite being besieged and attacked by invaders, the city has always been able to rebuild itself, thanks to the resilience of its people.
Even under French protection in the early twentieth century, Marrakesh continued to shine, and its people never lost their spirit. Today, the city is a symbol of hope, a testament to the strength of the human spirit, and a source of inspiration for all who seek to overcome adversity and achieve greatness.

The Saadian Tombs in Morocco are a top tourist site. They were originally only accessible through a mosque but opened to the public in 1917. Visitors enter through a narrow passage to an enclosed garden with two mausoleums containing over a hundred mosaic-decorated tombs.
The Koutoubia minaret is the centerpiece of Marrakech. It’s a square tower attached to the Koutoubia Mosque, built in the late 12th century. Though it’s not very tall at 250 feet, it’s still the tallest building in the city’s old town due to a planning ordinance restricting the height of other buildings to that of a palm tree.
This 19th-century palace, built for Ba Ahmed, son of the Grand Vizier Si Moussa, is lavishly decorated. It has multiple apartments that once housed Ahmed’s harem, a trapezoidal garden, a large tiled courtyard, and a mix of Andalusian and Moorish architecture, with antique objects d’art and hidden treasures.
In the afternoon, visit the souks and Jamaa el Fna square.
In Marrakech, the souks fill the alleys north of the central square. The sheer number of shops is overwhelming—100 of them in 100 yards. Every section of the souk has its specialty, with alleys devoted to everything from spices and ironwork to magic spell ingredients.
Jamaa el-Fna is the main square in Marrakech and has a rich history. Now, it is the city’s cultural hub and crowded with local activities and entertainers day and night. In the evenings, it transforms into an alfresco dining and entertainment venue for unusual performances of acrobats, storytellers, magicians, and Gnawa musicians.
