Overview
Atlas Mountains & Berber Traces is a day of exploring the High Atlas Mountains, discovering traditional Berber life and ever‑changing landscapes as you travel from Marrakech through Asni, Imlil, the Kik Plateau, and the Ourika Valley.
Your journey begins in Marrakech, leaving the bustle of the city behind as you drive towards the snow‑capped peaks of the Atlas. The first stop is Asni, a quiet Berber village surrounded by orchards and terraced fields. Here you can see traditional stone houses, watch everyday village life, and, on market days, experience a lively local souk where people from nearby hamlets come to trade their goods.
From Asni, the road climbs gently towards Imlil, a lush valley village at the foot of Mount Toubkal, North Africa’s highest peak. Imlil is the gateway for many mountain treks, but it also offers easy walks suitable for all levels. You can stroll through small hamlets, cross over irrigation channels, and observe walnut, cherry and apple trees growing along the valley. A visit to a Berber home gives you a glimpse of mountain traditions, followed by a relaxing lunch on a terrace overlooking the surrounding peaks.
After Imlil, the landscape opens up as you reach the Kik Plateau, a wide, elevated plain with spectacular panoramic views. From here, the High Atlas range stretches along the horizon, and on clear days, you can see down to Lalla Takerkoust Lake. The contrast between the rugged mountains, cultivated fields and distant water makes this one of the most photogenic spots of the day.
The route then continues towards the Ourika Valley, one of the greenest valleys near Marrakech. Following the river, you pass small villages clinging to the hillsides and terraced gardens that climb the slopes. In Ourika, you can relax in a café by the water, wander through the village streets, or take a short walk along the valley. Those who wish can continue a little further towards the waterfalls, while others enjoy the cooler air and peaceful mountain atmosphere.
By late afternoon, you return to Marrakech with a deeper appreciation of Berber culture and the natural beauty that lies just beyond the city—rivers, plateaus, and mountain villages that reveal a very different side of Morocco in a single, memorable day.
Atlas Mountains & Berber Traces is a unique Atlas Mountains experience that combines four iconic valleys and authentic Berber culture in one unforgettable day.
